Kim Zumwalt is the oldest of three sisters. She was born in 1950 in Coos Bay, Oregon; shortly afterward her family moved to a small rural community in Oregon's Willamette Valley. She grew up around animals. In addition to the horses, pigs, and sheep on the family farm, her father, who worked for the Fish and Wildlife Department, often brought home wild orphans (deer, pheasant, quail) to be hand-raised. She began taking photographs at the Benton County Fair in 1959, the year her 4-H pig ("Big One") won Best in Class. Big PigBig One might have won Best in Show if she had trained him properly, but he ruined his chances by running amuck during the final competition.

Kim Zumwalt received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Oregon, with additional study at the Sante Fe Photographic Workshop and the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY. Her work has appeared in The Village Voice, The Los Angeles Times, Mother Jones Magazine, Pacific Northwest Magazine, and many other publications. Ms. Zumwalt's photographs have been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows. Some of her work is available through the stock photography collections at FPG and Getty Images. In some cases, limited edition signed prints of the works appearing on this web site are available for purchase. Please inquire here about purchasing prints. The photographer currently lives on ten acres in Vaughn, on Washington's little-known Key Peninsula.
